General Overview

Proposed Construction : Replace the Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The existing bridge is aging and is too narrow for modern standards. A new four-lane bridge will be safer, and have improved capacity. The preferred alignment for a new four-lane structure is just north of the existing bridge. The intersection of 13th Street and Missouri Avenue must be reconstructed as part of the project.

Right-of-Way Needs: Acquisition of private property will be required to construct the project. Possible acquisitions for the bridge replacement project in Omaha include two businesses, six residences along Missouri Avenue, and six residences on the east side of 13th Street.

Phasing: Much of the new bridge will be constructed while traffic is maintained on the existing bridge. U.S.275 over the Missouri River must be closed for four to six months to complete construction, and traffic will be detoured along Interstate 80 via South 13th Street in Omaha and South 24th Street in Council Bluffs.
